Enthusiastic crowds at record-breaking 2010 World of Asphalt and AGG1 shows

The co-located 2010 World of Asphalt Show & Conference and AGG1 Aggregates Forum & Expo have just concluded a record-breaking run despite the lingering downturn, with packed exhibit aisles and education sessions.

The shows, which were held February 15-18, 2010 at the Duke Energy Center in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, posted record numbers for registrants, amount of exhibit space taken and number of education session tickets purchased.

Final registration numbers topped a record-breaking 6,200 for the two shows compared to 5,795 for the 2009 events, and included registrants from all 50 states, all 10 Canadian provinces, and more than 30 other countries worldwide. More than 25 percent were company presidents/owners, vice presidents, general managers or chief financial officers. All together, 80 percent of registrants were in managerial roles.

The show floor covered a record 87,000-plus net square feet of exhibit space, compared to the 2009 total of 85,900 net square feet. More than 340 exhibitors showcased the latest technologies, equipment and products for aggregates, asphalt, pavement maintenance, and traffic safety professionals.

A record 6,600 education session tickets were purchased for the conferences, training programs and seminars held with the two shows, compared to the 2009 total of 5,730.

"This was truly an industry gathering place with a positive buzz throughout the convention center. Participants connected to share experiences and get up to speed on the latest technologies and 'best practices' that will drive growth in tomorrow's economy," stated Show Director Melissa Magestro.

"Our industry has been hit hard by this recession but there is some optimism looking ahead. We received very favorable feedback about the shows' value in fostering these industry connections to help participants succeed," Magestro added.

AGG1 and World of Asphalt are industry-run shows, and industry support has been key to their success, explained Magestro. "We understand that attendees and exhibitors need to carefully evaluate their budgets and time and make choices. Our industry partnerships and co-located events broaden the depth of the show experience for all participants and provide maximum return on investment," she stated.Co-locating with AGG1 and World of Asphalt in 2010 were the Flexible Pavements of Ohio annual meeting and the Plantmix Asphalt Industry of
Kentucky (PAIKY) Winter Training School.

Several educational gatherings were also held in conjunction with the shows. These included the AGG1 Academy, the People, Plants and Paving Program, and the Asphalt Pavement Alliance's Asphalt Pavement Conference.

Attendees also had access to the co-located National Traffic Management and Work Zone Safety Power Workshop, sponsored by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA); a NIOSH Seminar on Major Hazard Risk Assessment; a Project Management Essentials workshop; and an OSHA 10-hour course for construction workers certification program.

The shows are not held during CONEXPO-CON/AGG show years so in 2011, World of Asphalt and AGG1 exhibitors and products will be spotlighted at CONEXPO-CON/AGG, in March 2011 in Las Vegas. The co-located shows return in 2012 - March 12-15 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

AGG1 is owned by the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA); World of Asphalt is owned by the National Asphalt Pavement Association
(NAPA) and Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). AEM is show producer.

Eatonite Laser Coating for Piston Rods is the First Anti-Corrosion Technology To Earn JIP Certification from DNV for use on Offshore Platforms

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced that its proprietary Eatonite™ Laser Clad coating technology was certified by independent test services company DNV after fulfilling requirements stated in the “Guideline for qualification of wear and corrosion protection surface materials for piston rods” developed as part of a Joint Industry Project (JIP).

“Eaton is the first, and to date the only, cylinder manufacturing company that has passed the JIP test requirements,” said Dr. Luis F. Garfias, director of Testing & Qualification for DNV’s Materials & Corrosion Technology Center in Columbus, Ohio.

“DNV-certified Eatonite laser coating technology is a significant breakthrough for upstream, offshore applications in the oil and gas industry,” said Astrid Mozes, vice president and general manager of Eaton’s Controls Division. “It will also provide new solutions in key industries like Hydropower and virtually anywhere else piston rods are exposed to severe environmental corrosion.”

Piston rod samples made of SAE 4130 steel coated with Eatonite were tested at DNV laboratories in Høvik, Norway, and Columbus, Ohio, for a wide range of physical, mechanical, and electrochemical properties to evaluate the performance of the Eatonite coating against the JIP standard.

“Controlling corrosion is an ongoing challenge for the offshore oil industry,” said Dr. Alexander Bogicevic, senior technology manager of Eaton’s Innovation Center in Southfield, Mich. “We developed the Eatonite laser coating technology to extend the life of piston rods used in hydraulic riser tensioning systems on offshore platforms. Many materials and processes were tested and the result of this multi-year development program was the Eatonite technology.

“After proprietary processing, the Eatonite material is twice as hard as conventional Inconel 625, a well known corrosion resistant alloy (CRA), but also has good cladding homogeneity due to the novel laser technology developed to deposit the Eatonite. As confirmed by the DNV certification testing, Eatonite-clad rods deliver the mechanical performance of traditional SAE 4130 steel piston rods, along with the corrosion resistance expected for CRA materials like Inconel 625. It really does give customers the best of both worlds”

Eatonite testing is the subject of a technical paper being prepared for the 2010 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).

DNV is a global provider of services for managing risk, helping customers to safely and responsibly improve their business performance. DNV is an independent foundation with presence in more than 100 countries. Eaton Manufacturing Plant Awarded “Efficiency Partner 2009”
Recognition by Xcel Energy Corporation

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced it has received Xcel Energy’s Efficiency Partner 2009 Recognition for its Eden Prairie hydraulic pump, motor and steering unit manufacturing facility.

“We’re very pleased to earn this recognition,” said Lawrence P. Harer, maintenance and tool room manager for the 40-year-old, 233,000 square foot plant. “What’s especially beneficial is that we didn’t just reduce our carbon footprint, we also improved the efficiency of our operations.”

Harer said that the Eden Prairie plant focused on opportunities related to its air management system. The plant requires a significant amount of compressed air for a variety of operations such as air-drying of painted parts, powering hand tools and removal of metal chips from machined parts.

“We replaced one of three compressors, invested in quieter, more low pressure types of air nozzles, eliminated some high volume compressed air blow offs with high efficiency blowers and installed an automated system to completely manage the plant’s air handling, he said. “Along with a series of other incremental changes, the improved air management system was the key to our success.”

Xcel Energy spokesman Ryan Schunk said the Efficiency Partners Recognition program recognizes a small group of businesses and trade partners for their outstanding efforts in 2008. "Energy-efficiency efforts, such as those at Eaton's Eden Prairie plant, are typically 'invisible' projects to those not directly involved with the project,” he said. “This program is a way to publicly congratulate those efforts in a fashion that employees and customers can recognize."

Xcel Energy is headquartered in Minneapolis and serves residential and industrial customers in the Midwest and Southwest.

ICUEE 2009 registration opens April 13

Attendee and exhibitor interest positive; Show offers new industry co-locations, expanded education

Advance registration for ICUEE – The Demo Expo is open as of April 13, 2009. Attendees can register online for the exhibition as well as show education and housing, and they can save time and money by registering in advance. Full details are online at www.icuee.com.
Despite a stalled economy, industry interest in the show remains positive. In a recent survey of past attendees:
• 94 percent said their companies were sending the same number or more people to the 2009 ICUEE compared to the last show.
• More than 48 percent said they planned to increase or keep the same level of equipment purchases as previous years.

ICUEE is the International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition, and the biennial event will be held October 6-8, 2009 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Without a doubt, these are difficult times for companies, but they know they need to keep up to speed to be ready for the recovery. And, AEM trade shows such as ICUEE are a proven way for industry professionals to connect with each other and learn from each other,” stated Show Director Melissa Magestro. “At ICUEE, they’ll not only find the newest innovations, they can ‘test drive’ them right on the show site.”

Magestro said that ICUEE has a track record of giving attendees access to the leaders in the utility and construction industry, and of bringing a highly qualified audience to the show for exhibitors. She cited some numbers from the last show:
• 97 percent said ICUEE was valuable to their business.
• 78 percent of attendees said they had a company role in purchasing equipment.
• 77 percent said they would not have made the same purchase decision if they did not attend ICUEE.

Exhibit space sales are trending ahead of the last show with more than 1 million net square feet taken. Magestro noted that 95 percent of exhibitors from the last show said they met their goal of introducing new products and services to customers, and she expects this to be no different for ICUEE 2009 exhibitors.
ICUEE’s value has increased with new co-located events for 2009 and a 100 percent increase in education offered, including sessions on sustainability and renewable energy. “Attendees will be ahead of their competition, with new ideas, sharpened skills and solid business connections,” Magestro stated.

New to ICUEE for 2009 are the inaugural H2O-XPO show (water and wastewater), the IUV Technical Conference and exhibit pavilion (design and engineering), and the iP Safety Conference and Safety Zone exhibit pavilion (safety and training). Eaton Speeds Warranty Evaluation And Repair, Names First 10 Certified Warranty Centers For Eaton, Vickers and Char-Lynn Products

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced it has certified the first 10 warranty centers under the Eaton Warranty Center Program. This program is designed to improve customer satisfaction by speeding warranty evaluation and repairs.

“Customers will be able to send qualifying Eaton®, Vickers®, and Char-Lynn® products to a Certified Warranty Center for warranty evaluation and repair rather than shipping it to the location that produced it,” said G. Paul Hagel, warranty center manager for Eaton’s Hydraulics Group. “Our goal is to streamline the warranty evaluation and repair process to minimize downtime and cost for our customers.

“Since announcing the program in 2008, distributors have expressed a lot of interest in the program and, as a result, Eaton is in process of certifying additional Warranty Center locations.”

In order to qualify as a Certified Warranty Center, the distributor must:

• Have adequate facilities including an area of at least 1,000 square feet dedicated to warranty evaluation and repairs;
• Participate in a regularly scheduled calibration program for tools, transducers, gauges and other devices used to evaluate products;
• Have test stands capable of 75 – 200 hp at 5,000 psi; and
• Employ qualified technicians that have successfully completed Eaton’s Failure Analysis Course.

The first 10 Certified Warranty Centers are located in Minnesota, Florida, Alabama and Candad. The program’s goal is to have 50 to 60 Certified Warranty Centers operating in all 50 states and Canada.

Eaton Premier Advantage. Premier Select hydraulic distributors and existing Eaton Quality Assurance Warranty Centers are eligible to participate in the Warranty Center Program after meeting strict certification standards.

In addition, Eaton named Dover Hydraulics of Dover, Ohio, as the exclusive Certified Warranty Center for Eaton’s Hydrokraft™ products. This will further enhance our customer experience by virtually eliminating the need for customers to return Hydrokraft product to the Wehrheim plant in Germany for warranty evaluation and repair. DTS Fluid Power of Grandville, Mich., will continue to be the exclusive Certified Warranty Center for Eaton’s ME Series Hydraulic Motors, which in most cases, eliminates the need for return of product to Eaton’s Japanese operations for evaluation and repair.

Eaton’s Hydraulics Operations Supports Sustainability With Plastic Hose Reel Recycling Program For Distributors
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation announced today it has enhanced its return and recycling program for plastic reels used to ship various hose products from Eaton’s Hydraulics Operations plants to Eaton distributors in the United States and Canada. As part of a company-wide effort to support environmental sustainability, Eaton distributors can return empty hose reels to a central location where they will be evaluated for re-use or recycling, depending on their condition. Reusable reel assemblies are then returned to Eaton facilities in the United States and Canada.
“Plastic hose reels are both safer and lighter than the wooden reels they replace,” said Jason Bricker, manager, materials planning for Eaton’s Hydraulics Operations. “Many localities will not accept wooden reels for recycling. In addition, they splinter easily and the metal banding used to secure the hose on them can present a safety hazard if handled improperly.
“The plastic reels eliminate all of those issues, and reduce shipping costs while opening the door for enhanced re-use and recycling opportunities that aren’t feasible with the wooden reels. The net result is a ‘greener,’ more sustainable operation with less environmental impact at every step of the process.”
Eaton’s Hydraulics Operations has contracted with Roadway Reverse Logistics of Grove City, Ohio, to pick up pallets of used hose reels from Eaton distributors and take them to their facility for reassembly, cleaning, and inspection prior to re-use or re-cycling. Distributors are requested to disassemble and palletize 22 or 28 inch reels prior to calling for a pick up, and encouraged to re-use original packaging to further reduce environmental impact.
Distributors can obtain a detailed program instruction sheet from Eaton’s Hydraulics Operations’ Customer Connect secure eBusiness website. There is no cost to distributors for this service.
Eaton’s Hydraulics Operation is a business segment of the Eaton Fluid Power Group. The business is a worldwide leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of a comprehensive line of reliable, high-efficiency hydraulic systems and components for use in mobile and industrial applications. $499,974 State Grant Supports Application Of Eaton’s Hydraulic Launch Assist
Technology To Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Texas Shuttle Bus Fleet

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation’s fuel-saving Hydraulic Launch Assist ™ (HLA) technology will be used on a south Texas fleet of urban shuttle busses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The shuttle bus emissions initiative was made possible by a $499,974 New Technology Research and Development (NTRD) Grant awarded by the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC). The grant, announced by HARC Program Director Rudy Smaling, builds on a highly successful 2006 project in which Eaton’s HLA systems were installed on 12 refuse trucks under a State of Texas New Technology Research and Development Grant.

“This is an important technology,” Smaling said. “It cuts exhaust emissions and fuel costs, making it possible for both operators and the environment to come out ahead. The refuse trucks delivered fuel savings of 25 to 28 percent, and we fully expect similar savings from the shuttle bus application. Eaton is a leader in developing and applying hybrid technologies that cut greenhouse gas emissions, as well as those of nitrous oxide.”

“We collaborated with HARC on the refuse truck project and look forward to building on that experience in rolling out HLA technology into the shuttle bus market,” said Bradley Bohlmann, business development manager for Eaton Fluid Power Group’s Advanced Technology Team. “HARC is a very forward-looking organization, and we could not ask for a better collaborator for the expansion of the HLA system and follow-on emission-reducing technologies.”

Eaton’s HLA system is a regenerative braking system that captures and stores the vehicle’s kinetic energy rather than dissipating it as heat. Braking energy is stored in pressurized accumulators and then used to help accelerate the vehicle. The HLA system is an ideal hybrid technology for vehicles with duty cycles including many starts and stops because it efficiently captures and re-cycles energy using relatively simple, highly-durable components that are easily integrated into conventional drivetrains.
